- George Russell was third and challenging for second place in the final lap
- He then crashed into the wall, turning a third place finish into a DNF
Mercedes driver George Russell saw his Singapore Grand Prix take a cruel turn on Sunday as he crashed into the barrier on the final lap.
The 25-year-old was pushing hard for a podium finish after a late pit stop and had made it to third place on the final lap.
He had been within a second of Norris, but ended up in the barriers on the second sector of his final lap while pushing for an overtake.
His teammate Lewis Hamilton made it past the crashed car into third, while Russell was unable to finish the race.
Russell could be heard shouting ‘no!’ on the radio as his race came to a premature end.

Russell touched the barrier on the right in the braking zone before sliding off the track and into retirement, as he chased down the leaders on much fresher medium tyres
Carlos Sainz went on to win the race after starting on pole and leading every lap
Carlos Sainz went on to win the Grand Prix after an excellent race that saw him start on pole and hold off challengers effectively throughout.
Norris held on to second place despite Hamilton’s late assault, while Max Verstappen failed to make it 11 wins in a row and finished fifth.
The Dutchman started in 11th and failed to pit with most other drivers during a yellow flag after 20 laps.
It gave him track position but his pace suffered, and it was only when he finally did pit with 20 laps remaining that Verstappen began to come through the field.
Formula One will return next weekend for the Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka.
