SF Smoking Hypnosis Study Needs Volunteers
Hypnosis has long been a popular treatment for smokers who want to quit, but there has been little concrete evidence of its effectiveness. Now, a research study being conducted in San Francisco could provide such evidence.
Researchers with the San Francisco V.A. Medical Center are recruiting smokers for a study of hypnosis.
“We are interested in investigating the effectiveness of the use of a specific form of hypnosis, for helping people to “stay-quit” after they have quit smoking for at least three days,” said Dr. Timothy Carmody, a V.A. Medical Center psychologist and professor at UCSF.
Carmody says researchers are recruiting 520 men and women who smoke for the study. Of those participants who successfully quit for three days, half will be treated with standard behavioral relapse prevention. The others will be treated with two face-to-face hypnosis sessions.
“Participants are helped into a relaxed, receptive state, and given suggestions regarding the enhancement of motivation to “stay-quit” and the confidence to “stay- quit” and how to deal with the temptation to smoke when it arises,” said Carmody.
