Smoking vent sparks airport alert
Part of Newcastle Airport was evacuated on Saturday after a smoking vent set off a fire alarm.
The small fire, which started in ducting at the airport’s Burger King outlet, was quickly extinguished by on-site fire crews.
About 350 travellers in the departure lounge were evacuated, but the rest of the facility was unaffected, said an airport spokeswoman.
A small number of outbound flights suffered minor delays, she added.
The alarms were triggered at about 1615 BST, by a “localised” fire.
A statement released by the airport read: “Customers and staff in the departure lounge were evacuated immediately. The incident occurred during a relatively quiet period of the day, affecting around 350 passengers.
“The incident was stood down just after 1700 BST and passengers were escorted back into the departure lounge shortly afterwards.
“A small number of outbound flights scheduled to depart at around the time of the incident suffered minor delays of approximately one hour as a result.
“The airport is operating as normal and passengers are asked to check in for flights as usual.”
